Retro Soul, Tucson Heart: Hotel McCoy - Mario Villa
OCT 26, 2026
Some hotels are a place to sleep. Hotel McCoy is a place you end up telling people about. I stayed there for two nights in late October with our group of three, and it did not take long to see why guests speak about this place the way they do. It starts with the people. They were so nice, genuinely and consistently, and that warmth shapes everything else about the stay.
The welcome sets the tone right away. Check in felt less like a transaction and more like arriving at the home of a friend who happens to run a very cool motel. The team had answers for everything: dinner ideas, directions, and the kind of local tips you cannot find in a search result. You can tell when a place is run by people who love what they do, and you feel it in the small moments. McCoy is full of small moments.
Cozy Rooms, Full of Art
The word for the rooms is cozy, and I mean that as the highest praise. Our rooms were warm and personal, with local art on the walls, a serape runner across the bed, and thoughtful touches everywhere you looked. One room had a green desk I immediately claimed as my content corner, plus a retro red fridge that made the whole space feel playful. The beds were the sink in and stay kind, with pillows in both firm and fluffy, so everyone slept exactly how they like.
The building itself is a restored 1970 motor lodge, and the rooms keep that retro character while giving you everything modern: a big TV, strong air conditioning, blackout curtains, and parking right in front of your door at no charge. Mornings started slow, with local coffee and the complimentary oatmeal bar, which the hotel proudly calls the longest in the world. I am not in a position to measure the competition, but I went back for seconds.
The Pool Was the Main Event
Let me be direct: the pool was amazing. It is a heated saltwater pool, beautifully restored, and it became the center of our days. Mornings, afternoons, golden hour, we kept finding reasons to be in the water or beside it. A pink flamingo float drifts around like it owns the place, murals cover the walls behind the deck, and the mountains sit right there in the background while you swim.
Around the pool the whole property opens up: shaded seating, games like ping pong and cornhole, a firepit for the evening, and quiet corners when you want them. It has the energy of a summer camp for grown ups and the calm of a desert retreat at the same time. If you book one place in Tucson for the pool alone, book this one.
A Bar That Keeps It Local
The bar might be my favorite room in the hotel. The mosaic tile alone is worth the visit, and the menu keeps everything close to home: craft beer brewed in Tucson, wine from Arizona wine country, and coffee roasted right in the city. It is the perfect first stop after check in and the perfect last stop before bed, casual and colorful, with staff who remember your name and your order. Order the grilled cheese if it is on offer. Trust me.
Art in Every Corner
Hotel McCoy treats the whole property as a gallery. The lobby is lined with work from Arizona artists, the walls outside are covered in murals, and every room carries its own pieces. Nothing feels mass produced. Even the leather couch in the lobby, draped with a colorful serape blanket, looks like it was placed there by someone with a point of view. You end up walking the property slowly, camera out, just to take it all in.
Close to Everything
The location sealed it for me. Hotel McCoy sits on Silverlake Road, minutes from downtown Tucson, and close to everything we came for. We spent a morning at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, drove through saguaro country in Saguaro National Park, and were back at the pool by the afternoon. Dinner downtown, Fourth Avenue, the university area: all of it is an easy drive, and the freeway is right there when you need it. As a home base for Tucson, I cannot imagine a better one.
Art, coffee, beer, wine. The sign says it all.
Final Thoughts
Hotel McCoy is what happens when kind people restore a vintage motor lodge and fill it with art, good drinks, and genuine care. Cozy rooms, an amazing pool, a bar I keep thinking about, and a team that was so nice to us from start to finish. Tucson has plenty of places to stay. This is the one I will keep coming back to. Thank you to everyone at Hotel McCoy for a stay I will not forget.
